Why rainbow sparks when moving points?
Posted by Tom on June 28, 2007 at 2:34 pmCan anyone help me shut this “feature” off?
When I am modeling with spines/points, every time I move a point,
I get these rainbow looking lines that shoot out all over the place
(like Timothy Leary’s version of normals). Thanks in advance,

June 28, 2007 at 4:50 pmSounds like an OpenGL problem. Do you have the latest drivers for your card? Does it still happen if you disable OGL in preferences?

June 28, 2007 at 11:35 pmThanks Adam, spot on!
When I changed to Software Shading, no more sparks. What is the advantage of OpenGL over Software-Shading?
Cheers,

June 29, 2007 at 3:49 pmOpenGL will give you much livelier viewport performcane, provided you have a reasonably modern video card. The new (v10) Extended OpenGL will also provide a much better preview of the rendered image, with support for bump/normal maps, shadows, improved transparency, etc.
What video card are you using?

June 29, 2007 at 4:42 pmHere is my system:
OS: WinXP Pro SP2
Video Card: GeForce8600GTS 256MB, Driver up-to-date.
CPU: Intel Dual core @ 1.86Ghz
Ram: 2GBI believe (hope) this system is adequate enough and it’s my settings
that are the issue. Can I actually update myself to Extended OpenGL (v10)?
[not sure what I actually have now..]Cheers / TH

[not sure what I actually have now..]”Hi Tom,
Your system should be more than ample to run OGL and EOGL (which is just an option in v10’s View>Properties. You can confirm EOGL compatibility by checking the general preferences>viewport settings. In there you’ll find a button called “Show OpenGL Capabilities.” Press the button and if all is well the bottom line in the resulting dialogue should say, “Your graphics card has all necessary extensions for Enhanced OpenGL”.If you continue to have problems you should probably give Maxon’s tech support a ring. It could be a hardware problem or….?

July 3, 2007 at 4:41 pmFYI:
I found something here that works, although I don’t understand why:
https://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=38802
When I uncheck this, all is well:
[ ] Use OGL Points for Handles(faster if supported)
