[Michael Gissing] “All the more reason why having to buy a new case, screen, keyboard etc is silly when the most likely thing that needs to adhere to the old 18months churn is the GPU.”

GPU is even more specialized than CPU. Increased specs aren’t a direct correlation to more performance.

    THIS.

That GPU won’t be optimized if you’re lacking the I/O into and out of it, the heat management, and the properly matched power management, etc, etc, to allow it to work properly.

One user will appreciate the ability to fiddle/upgrade/tune each stage in the process.

Other users will prefer to “buy a box” that has all those engineering issues settled in advance and simply performs to their expectations.

When they see the capabilities of other systems improve – they’ll sell that box and buy another.

Build a car – or buy a car. There’s ample room for drivers who prefer to do both.

It’s also OK to note that over time – the “build your own car” approach pretty much lost favor while the alternative approach GAINED favor.

Hard to say if that is happening here, but I suspect so.

    Time will tell.

It’s unfortunate that so many people are afraid of building their own system. Nowadays it’s quite easy to do and much more economical.

It might be more economical. Or not.

Depends largely on the opportunity cost of your time.

If you have the time to maintain your personal “system integrator” chops – then you can absolutely save money – but maintaining that expertise will be a significant time investment simply due to the pace of innovation on the hardware side.

The “turn-key” system editor offloads all of that – for plug and play efficiency.

    Nothing wrong with that.

While it’s true that custom building your own edit system will require more time initially, the amount of time required to maintain a custom build is no more than any turn-key computer and that’s especially true now that hardware upgrade cycles are further apart than in the past.

It really is no contest. The amount of time I need to invest in researching and building a PC is so small compared to the cost and time saving over the years of usage.

It really boils down to not wanting to bother but you can’t seriously argue it is about the value of your time. Especially when you argue so often for the sheer time saving you get from particular software. To then slow that down with hardware and pay more for that inefficiency, it’s just as well you find the software fast. It is possible to have both but we can always find self justification for not wanting to do something. In this case personal time and cost saving isn’t really true. Nothing wrong with just saying you don’t want to do it.

[Michael Gissing] “To then slow that down with hardware and pay more for that inefficiency, “

    What slowdown?

Most of the internet benchmarks seem to show that running FCP X on an off-th-shelf “turnkey system” iMac Pro – equals or exceeds the productivity of ANY comparable build to suit system out there.

That may not be achievable via Premiere or AVID – but That’s what the literature suggests for editors who think like me.

So far I haven’t heard about any Hacintosh editors achieving productivity gains OR effectively saving any money via BTO options – so it’s not relevant to me.

If or when that changes, I’ll reconsider.

I will say I truly don’t miss the constant study required to know which building block components represented the best bang for the buck in do-it-yourself computing.

Maybe some of that will return with whatever “modularized” MacPro replacement is on the horizon – but I kinda hope they do “packaged” pre-tuned system’s even in that space.

As I noted up top – my interest in DYI “hot rodding” is history.

I can’t speak to the Hackintosh builds but I definitely saved a significant amount of money custom building a PC instead of waiting for the new imac pro and paying the Apple premium.

To each his own but forums like the Cow and Adobe Hardware make researching very easy so it’s not really a burden.

Given your simple needs and total satisfaction with FCPX, I guess you don’t need or get a choice or even know what bang for buck is out in the real world. So my comments are doubtless lost on you but relevant to others.

He’s talking about running FCPX on a Hackintosh. We all know that a custom build PC can be cheaper
