  • Why is there a black frame between clips.

Posted by Dave Atkinson on December 4, 2011 at 9:03 am

    Hi.

I have just started using FCPX and i have encountered a problem. Occasionally there will be a flash of black between two clips being played on the timeline When i zoom into the area it seems that there is a black frame at the end of the first and beginning of the second clip. I have the opacity at full and there are no transitions so it should change smoothly.

    Any ideas?

Open the timeline index. Do you have gap clips there? If so, delete them.

I’ve had this problem as well. It’s incredibly annoying. No gap frames – it seems to be a render problem. I’ve gotten around it by extending the clips and playing around with trimming it until it eventually goes away. So far I haven’t seen it in 10.0.2 but I haven’t done as much since I’ve upgraded.

I was having the same trouble.

Turns out the opacity was set to 0 for just the first and last frames of my clip. And no matter how I trimmed the clip, the opacity would always be 0 on the first and last frame. My *guess* is that this is due to one of the effects I had applied and then removed. Perhaps it’s a bug. Not sure.

Anyway, go to the first or last frame (when you select it, the viewer should show black) and then go check your opacity. If that’s what you already did, then sorry to point out what may have been obvious. It confused me, though!

    😉

Thanks for your reply. Im glad im not the only one. I found a solution which is to just replace the clip. But i like your idea too. How to i view the opacity of the clip? I have found the COntrol V shortcut but that says it is at 100%.

    1) Select as close as you can to the first (or last) frame of the clip.

    2) Then hold the ‘K’ key and tap the ‘J’ key to move back one frame at a time (or hold the ‘K’ key and tap the ‘L’ key to move forward one frame).

3a) Once you’re on the very first or last frame of your clip, check the opacity by opening the Inspector (the little ‘i’ icon on the far right)

    3b) Select the video tab

3c) Scroll down until you find the “compositing” section.

When I was having this trouble, that’s where I found the opacity slider that fixed it for me. Hope that helps!

    Hi guys, first time poster.
I was having this problem and found a solution so i wanted to post in case other people get to hear when they search for the same issue.
-highlight the video clip in the timeline
-Go to the inspector on the right (open with the little ‘I’)
-Click the little reset button on the compositing tab/section.
    Done 😀
    Hope that helps guys!

I’m having this same problem in 10.0.7 on OS X 10.8.3 – extremely annoying. I’m not using any effects, just moving clips from viewer to storyline. Seems to be an issue in rendering because my source clip is 640×480, 6.98fps, being dropped into a 1080p project at 30fps – I’m guessing something in the frame rate conversion is causing the issue – but this still seems to be a bug rather than an effect of mixed frame rates.

I found several black frames in an edition, due to capture issues. I did a visual check, expanding to the largest size the frames and the height of the filmstrip and activating “show video filmstrips” in the timeline view options, to view every frame in the filmstrip. Clicking on the scroll bar will advance the timeline the full width of the screen, in mine this is some 30/32 frames. The black frames will be evident in the filmstrip (if you check it actually watching the movie, you will miss some of them).

Brilliant – four years down the line but you still solved the problem. For some reason the slider was disabled, but the reset worked a treat. Still not sure why the end frame was black in the first place …

    Many thanks
    John
