why is premiere pro cs4 rebuilding media cache files everytime open a project?

Where are the media cache files being saved?
Where are the media cache databases being saved?
PPro will rebuild the cache for files when it can thinks that it has not already done so – so perhaps the location of the cache database is changing locations. Check your preferences>media

Its true, i work on an external hard drive, but its drive letter never changes. The media cache directory is in the project folder, on the external hard drive. The Media Cache database is in its default folder in C:\documents and settings\….\adobe\common.

Nothing gets deleted, nothing changes in those folders.

Premiere just keeps building peak files for every file i have in the project. In the media cache folder, the files get incremented by 1.

Like this: Fileone 44100.pek turns into Fileone 44100_1.pek.

Same file size.

And this is killing my free space.

The problem with the media preference settings (for those of switching hard drives) is that they are global, so for instance, if you set the media files specifically to go to a folder, then that setting will be true for all projects an any drive. So when you go back to the first Hard Drive and open that project and the program looks for you files in a drive that doesn’t exist, it creates new files in the default location (adobe/common). Then if you change the settings to the folder on the drive you want the next time it runs it sees that the info has changed and creates new files in there – again – it won’t even recognize the files it created in earlier attempts, I guess because they don’t match the file names in the Media Cache database.

So what I have done is as follows: Leave the Database in the Adobe/common folder so all your projects can access it, and then for the Media Cache itself, select the check mark that says something like “put the cache next to to the source files.” I don’t have the program in front of me. That should permanently solve the problem. It did for me anyway. Basically, you should never change the media preference settings once the are set.

Well, the cache folders in preferences haven’t changed, the drive letter didn’t change, or the name of the files being cached. 🙂

similar here – Yesterday I opened an HDV project, files appeared right away, no indexing. Today I opened the same project from same location, it is now indexing the HDV files from scratch. Annoying.

I work in an Premiere CS4/Windows7 station, and have the same problem. Premiere generates peak files every time we open the projects, and name it VIDEOFILE 48000_1.pek and so on.
This occurs only when the media files are in an external disk connected via USB.
There is no display of waveform in the while.
I have tried to change the media cache folder and clean the cache database, without succes.
Hey people from Adobe, this is VERY ANNOYING. In old Premiere Pro 1.5 whith same setup and type of proyect this worked fine.

Same problem here. Outboard drive connected via ESATA. I’m going to check if connecting the drive directly to a spare SATA connection on the motherboard, rather than the outboard connection, solves the problem. But it’s REALLY FREAKING SLOWING ME DOWN!!

Same problem here with CS5. “Save next to original” is activated. But all caches are done twice. When cache file No1 is done, it immediately creates the _1 version next to it. Annoying.
