  • Why is my 3d layer is partially disappearing when camera moves

    Howdy,

    I’ve created a 3d composition and am observing some strange behavior that I can’t figure out.

    Here is the set-up

    *2 visual layers.
    A background and a title. These both have a Z-position of 0 and the forground is above the background in the layer stack. All rotation/orientation values are 0

    * 1 camera.
    default camera settings. Using an expression to make the null below’s position the point of interest for the camera.

    * 1 null layer
    I’m animating the null’s position to make a camera move I have created simpler to manage. (Thanks for the tutorial Rick Gerard)

    I have created a camera move that tracks around the background and eventually ends by settling on the title. Because of how i have animated it the camera basically rotates around the null layers anchor point. when the title first comes in to the camera frame it is hidden. as the camera rotates in to it’s final position, the title begins to appear. The camera swings in from the upper left and the title first appears in the upper left and start to appear.

    It seems as though the title is behind the background and begins to push through. This is not a hard edge though it a soft transition from opaque to transparent.

    When viewed through the “front” view the stacking order looks correct (the title is “on top”) like wise when i view it through the “custom view 1” and move the camera all around I am unable to recreate this wierdness.

    I have also tried changing the z-position of this to -1 and it still happens but it’s not as sever (it clears up earlier.

    I need to animate the title lifting off the background otherwise I would just precompose.

    Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks so much for your time.

    Set the Title’s Z-position to -1. IOW don’t set the two layers at the same z-position. Depending on camera movements, you will get unwanted artefacts such as layers suddenly disappearing which is in effect a case of the layers switching places in 3D space.

    As long as one layer is correctly offset from the other you should be fine.

    Just to add to that, you may have to adjust the z position even more than 1 if motion blur or depth of field is turned on. Even if one is position in front of the other, when the layers are far away or moving quickly, you may notice them getting cut off again. Just keep separating them until they no longer do it.

    Thanks so much for you quick responses.

    Indeed it was an interplay between the 3dness and motion blur. The background had motion blur checked and the title didn’t. When I checked motion blur on the title it reappeared completely.

    I suspect that the background was being “blurred” around the title where the motion of the background was greater (further away from the axis of rotation) — i.e. another render order gotcha thing.

    Anyways thanks a million!
