  • Why is DVD Architect recompressing my mp2 file?

Posted by Kent Clark on September 20, 2008 at 6:21 pm

I’m making a 30 second intro video for a series of DVDs. I edited in Movie Studio Platinum 8.0. I rendered using main concept video and AC3 audio. If I understand the Sony docs for DVD architect this should give me audio and video files that do not need recompression in DVD architect.

But when I load the files into DVDA and start the burn process I get the following:

The audio on track 1 of ‘dvd intro’ will be compressed.
The video ‘dvd intro.mpg’ on track 2 ‘Video’ in ‘dvd intro’ will be recompressed.

I clicked on the help icon for the warnings and got the following:

If you’re using a supported format and see this message, use the Optimize DVD dialog to choose a specific video format instead of the Automatic setting.

When I go to optimize it is not on Automatic, it is on NTSC DV.

So, why is my file being recompressed? And for a bonus, what does it mean in the warnings when it refers to audio on track 1 and video on track 2? My video track is on top, isn’t that track 1?

    Thanks for helping me out.

If you render using just the “DVD NTSC” template, its gonna
    re-compress.
You need to render using the “DVD Architect video stream”
template, and then render your audio separately.

you need to then give them the same name, so that when you
import in architect both video and audio will be present.

Thanks Steve. Would this be the correct way to follow your instructions:

I choose the Render As option. On the dialog box that pops up I then choose MainConcept MPEG-2 (*.mpg). After that I choose the DVD Architect Video Stream option under templates and then render the video.

Once that finishes rendering I go back to Render As, choose the Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio (*.ac3) option, make that file’s name the same as the video, and then render again?

Exactly…Normally I recommend to render the audio as wave
    48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, PCM.

AC-3 will be smaller than PCM, thus is my choice.

This is how I’ve always created mpeg2’s for architect, but can anyone explain why DVD Architect can’t support a standard DV NTSC mpeg2 file? I realize using the DVD Architect dv ntsc format allows it to embed chapter stops and other architect-specific stuff, but why couldn’t it take a simple mpeg2 and place that on a dvd just as easily as any other without rerendering?

I think this would be a nice ability to have, because on occasion we’ve needed projects I’ve already rendered to mpeg2 to be brought over and used in DVD Studio Pro on the macs but obviously the DVD Architect specific mpeg2’s won’t work. For short projects that don’t need any fancy meta data it’d be nice to use a more universal format.
