  • Why is Cinema 4D so often used in motion graphics?

    Seems to me, that Cinema 4D is the premium choice, when it comes to motion graphics for television (logos and text animations). Why is this?

    I am experienced After Effects user, with some knowledge about basic text and logo animation in 3D Max. But I am tired of the cluttered interface of 3D Max, and as I have just switched over to OSX, I would like to look into Cinema 4D for basic animation. I will not be using character animations or anything like that, but integrated text and composoting logos into real-life shot footage in AE.

    So any thoughts about if this is the right choice for meg? What are the reasons for Cinema 4D being the premium choice for motion graphics jobs like this? And of course…where do I start? At Lynda? Or take some classes?

    Thanx

    I think Cinema is popular in motion graphics for a number of reasons:

    * It’s cross platform and virtually identical on Mac and Windows;

    * It has great connectivity to AE (automatically transfer cameras, lights, multiple passes, object motion/rotation data);

    * It’s probably the easiest full-featured 3D application to learn and use;

    * It has the fantastic MoGraph module which allows you to create some fantastic motion graphics effects very easily;

    * It’s probably the most stable 3D application on the market.

    As far as learning, I’ve heard good things about the Lynda series but no personal experience. There are some excellent MoGraph module video tutorials here at the Cow, created by Mylenium. Also some other good C4D tutorials here. There is Cineversity.com which is a subscription-based video tutorial site created by MaxonUS — well worth the price in my opinion. The site has a HUGE number of tutorials available covering virtually every function of the program. C4Dcafe.com is another excellent tutorial site (free). There are several decent books out, but I think they are all a version or so behind.
