[Tom Wolsky] “I think you have a PCMCIA cardbus on the 17″ Walter. I don’t know if any one is manufacturing an ExpressCard FW800, though there probably will be one soon.”

Yep, that’s exactly what I have. The one I have won’t fit into a new MacBook Pro, but I’m sure there will be one along soon enough for FW 800 on the new machines.

Yeah I know the new marketing name is MacBook Pro … but quite frankly I this this name sucks … I like PowerBook , so I’ll continue to use it for a few months anyway.

Name aside they don’t have PowerPC chips in them either. I think Jobs is trying to keep things simple. The towers will go back to just Macinthosh Pro. The books will be MacBook pros. People are speculating the ibooks will be MacBooks. But I doubt it since they kept the iMac name.

Years ago when the first iMac was introduced Steve said “the i stands for internet.” And they advertised it as the easiest computer to get on the internet. But I guess the i stands for intel now.

All in all, since the MacBook pros seem to be missng a couple ports, maybe there is room for a better line… the ProBook.

[Dave LaRonde] “How many serious FCP users — those who make their living by using FCP — actually capture, edit and finish… i.e., do the whole project on just a laptop? Hands? Anybody? Hmmmm….”

Finish? No. Important to a workflow? Yes. Important to have the FW 800 input? Yes.

When we produced our independent film, my 17″ Powerbook with G-RAID 800 went on location to provide video playback and on the spot editing capabilities. This was very important to our workflow as we could check shots and edits on the spot before moving the cameras and gear.

I’m working with several non-fiction television production teams and the laptops with FW 800 and AJA Io’s will play a huge role in the post for those shows. All shows will be finished on two Kona 2 HD systems, but without the ability to cut first on the laptop, our Post time will have to be increased.

So as a professional FCP Editor, I do think laptops play a very important role in today’s Post workflow.

That is a good point, after all, only two laptops have been released so far along with the iMac. The product line has just been born and here we have people griping about what it doesn’t have. I’m sure when the first towers come out, there will be those who jump all over what they don’t have rather than what is there.

Give Apple a year to let the product mature a bit and then we’ll be able to see how many options all of us will have.

Walter, please tell us more about your use of laptops in the field… I’d like to better understand what you are accomplishing and how.

    Thanks,

    Robert

    …uh
P2 use the PCMCIA format which was used in the old PowerBooks.

Now you don’t have a FireWire 800 port or a PCMCIA slot.

    Puzzled…

Here is the official site: Official Home Page for ExpressCard Technology from PCMCIA.

Duel Systems – ExpressCard isn’t even listed as a developer. Supposedly they have a ExpressCard to PCMCIA adapter in the “pipeline”.

    Presently gnashing teeth…

I’m sure everyone’s seen this by now, but just in case anyone’s still looking:

G-Technology now has a 3-port Firewire 800 PCI-Express Adapter I’m getting it for the G5 so I don’t have to run the drive and the deck off the same single bus. It has 2 high-speed external FW 800 ports and one 6-pin 400.

https://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-RAID.cfm#Acc – at the top of the Accessories list.
