  • Why don’t my Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format FW drives appear in FCP?!

When I connect my camera via FW and try to import large files, I can’t get FCP to display my FW 3TB drive. It’s Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted with just the one partition. My internal drive is partitioned into three and they are all shown as drives I can create events on. The 3TB ext is also one of my TimeMachine drives.

I have another FW 2TB drive that is not a TimeMachine drive and also is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format and it wont mount/display in FCP X either. They all mount and work fine in Finder.

This sometimes happens with a camera and drive connected at the same time to FW. Most Macs have on;y one FW controller, even though they have multiple FW ports, and so can’t control both devices. You might want to capture to your internal drive then copy out to your 3TB.

    Hi John

I only have the drive connected and I have tried a HSF+ drive and an exFAT drive alternatively. My 2.5″ USB drive works okay though with FCP X.

I actually have two FW buses because I have one built in and one with two more ports on a PC Express card (the last 17″ MBP to have a PCExpressCard slot). Even so Drives won’t display in FCP X.

Does the drive show up as a camera. That can happen if you have a DCIM or camera card of some other flavor at the root of your drive. If that’s the case, put those cards inside a folder and you’re good to go. If it’s not that I’m out of ideas. BTW, having 2 FW busses is definitely the smart way to go.
