Why doesn’t trim to CTI work when outside the clip?
if i have play head inside the size of the clip, trim to CTI works. If i move the playhead past the end of the clip, the trim to CTI does not work.

Technically, outside the clip, you are rolling the edit not trimming. Try setting the roll next/precious edit shortcuts.
