Why Doesn’t Compound Clip With Effects in One Project Still Have Effects When Placed in Another Project?
I’m trying to figure out how to retain effects and transformations placed on a compound clip in one project when that compound clip is inserted into another project.
For example, in project A I have grouped a number of clips into a compound clip called C1. While in project A I’ve added to that compound clip (e.g. so it affects the entire compound clip) a color board effect and some transformation adjustments.
Then when I go into project B and insert compound clip C1 from my clip browser the newly inserted C1 does not have the effect or transformation adjustments I made when it was in project A.
Is there a way for the adjustments I make in one project to transfer over to another project? In reality, I have something like 200 compound clips along these lines—many w/ adjustments made in one project—that need to get inserted into and reassembled in another project … and I don’t want to lose all those adjustments!
Finally, is there anything else that doesn’t transfer over I should be aware of? I also made some audio adjustments along the way.

I think (if I understand correctly) the answer is because it (a compound clip) behaves like a source clip. You wouldn’t expect a source clip with an effect applied to it in one project to appear with the effect applied in another project. If however the effect was nested WITHIN a compound clip then it would be there in all instances of the compound clip. It’s possible to make a compound clip out of a compound clip (so it’s 2 levels deep). Maybe that would work in your current situation. I think the same would be true for audio adjustments – if the adjustments are made WITHIN the compound clip they are part of the compound clip, if they are made to an instance of the compound clip within a specific project they are part of that specific instance.

Thank you, that helps me understand what’s going on. Out of curiosity, I just tried copy/paste of the compound clip from one project to another, and in that case it retains the applied effects. So that would be another way to move them across (in addition to your compound clip in a compound clip idea). Thanks again.

Dirk is correct.
Julie, in your particular case it would be better to use adjustment layers.
Instead of applying your color corrections onto the compound clip, open the CC and put an adjustment layer on top of the clips inside the CC. Then apply your color correction or whatever video effects to the adjustment layer. This way, your changes to the CC will ripple through all your projects where that CC is used.

Or if you prefer, open the compound, and compound the contents that are inside, then add your effects to that. Essentially the same result.

I just noticed you said that you also might apply audio changes to the compound clip. You cannot do this with adjustment layers. So Brett’s solution might be better for you.
