why does sequence image change only in timeline?
Posted by Craig Johnson on December 11, 2010 at 3:47 pmI’ve poked around on past posts and don’t see the exact problem. I have 6 sequences in my project. When each sequence is expanded into it’s clips and is rendered, it plays perfect. when I save and close the tab and go to the main timeline, some of the changes revert back to wrong aspects or adopt aspects from some of the other sequences making the images look wrong. Some of the sequences are unaffected and play perfect. Then I created a new timeline and dragged my “repaired” sequences back in one at a time and re-rendered one at a time and after the 4th good sequence, things began to go strange with the image aspects. Still, when I double click on the offending sequence and play it expanded, it’s fine. I check the settings on the clip and they look correct. This project was using multiple cameras but ironically, this sequence that is giving me problems only used one. Any ideas??

December 11, 2010 at 4:58 pmNested sequences and multicam?
Everytime I have used either I have run into random problems.
Have you tried copying the elements of each of your nested sequences into a non nested master sequence and rendering/playing that?
Not exactly the answer you were probably looking for, but it is what I would do, not use nesting that is.

December 11, 2010 at 5:10 pmI’ll try that. Can you suggest a work flow for me. I have never done that process and don’t know a procedure for doing that.

December 11, 2010 at 7:01 pmOk, i’ll give it a shot,
I assume by your earlier post you have 6 subsequences ‘Sequences A-F’ which are nested in a main sequence called ‘Main Sequence’ (imaginative huh? 🙂 )
First off, do all of this on a copy of your project, not original. Just so I have said it.
So Main sequence is a fairly simple sequence, with 6 nested clips with video all on V1 and audio on A1 & A2.
Open the timeline to each subsequence and in turn, select all clips (cmd-a), move all video up one track and audio down two tracks, copy (cmd-c) go to main sequence and go to the start of the subsequence in the timeline of the main sequence. Paste (cmd-v). Lather, rinse, repeat.
At the end you will have the nested sequence on V1, A1&A2 and all clips from original sequences above/below. You can delete the nested sequences and should have kept all render files so it should now play.
If I assume correctly that is.

December 11, 2010 at 7:38 pmYour assumptions are correct as to the layout of my project.
I’m excited that such a simple procedure would work. I’m at work now, but just as soon as I can get back to my home office, I’ll be trying this immediately.
Why do you suppose this would work? I’m playing the dynamics in my head and wonder what the difference would be in this procedure compared to the next. Although, if it works, who gives a rat’s hinder.
I really do appreciate your time and effort. I’ll post my results.
Thanks!

December 13, 2010 at 3:07 amI tried it and a few different times with no difference. One thing else that I know must be a clue, this camera doesn’t need to be rendered because of the match in settings. At least it hasn’t up to this point in the project. In this offending clip it does need rendering. I do a Command nine to check the properties and all seems ok. Stumped. The two problems must be related. Been looking at this screen for a week now.
I do appreciate you taking a shot at it though.
Thanks again

December 13, 2010 at 11:53 pmThat’s a generous offer. I’m not sure how to do that as it’s two and a half hours long. I had the same offer to see someone in person last Thursday but when I got there and we tried to load it on his computer, it wouldn’t as he had an older version of FCP than my V7.
I appreciate you hanging in there though.

January 9, 2011 at 4:35 pmI’m not sure if this is where I can ask this, but is there a different software than FCP that can handle multiple camera’s better? I’ve been on this project for almost a year and can’t get it to work. I figure if I can’t get it to work with advice from such proven experts here, I haven’t a chance of getting it by myself. I used Adobe before I graduated to FCP and had zero issues with using different camera’s but the finished DVD’s stalled often and the quality was really pixelated. Disappointing as I actually liked the software, just couldn’t get the quality high enough. I have heard rumors that Avid has no issues with multiple camera’s and the finished DVD is a high quality product. Do any of you have any first hand knowledge if this is true or not or if any other program is out there that would fit my needs better?
Thanks in advance.

January 9, 2011 at 5:26 pmHi Craig,
What kind of footage are you editing and which are your final Sequence Setting?
Think that if you are working with any compressed format, your stuff is re-compressed twice:
First is rendered on each Nested sequence, thenthose render files are re-processed again on your final sequence: NO-NO.
On those cases, the best is to TRASH all renders and making a final all at-once rendering of your master sequence.
Of much help would be to change your master sequence codec (Prores) while setting the best rendering options (High Precision + Best Motion Effects processing”)

January 10, 2011 at 12:14 amHi Rafael,
I think you and Donal O Kane are on a similar track as to why the project fails in the master sequence. I can double click on any of the sequences, and after they open in the time line, they play perfect. maybe it is a re-render issue, but trashing my render files is a task I can find no information on. I wouldn’t have a clue on how to do that and as usual, by trying, I’m sure it would cause other problems. That is why I may be better off looking for a different software. Too many issues with FCP. I just want to edit, not spend months researching an answer to the software.
