  • why does render change aspect ratio

Posted by Larry Cole on November 4, 2013 at 6:25 pm

I have a ntsc 720×480 project that I’m trying to render out to the same aspect ratio. When I start the render to a mp4 file, the preview window changes and then says I have a 672×512 preview and a 672×512 project. I’ve also noticed that the render has very short black bars at the top and bottom of the video. Any idea of what is happening?
    Thanks

You are trying to render a format that uses non-square pixels (NTSC DV PAR 0.9091) to a format that uses square pixels (MP4 PAR 1.000). The correct resolution for NTSC DV in square pixels is 655×480. Try rendering to that resolution and see if it fixes things.

When would one use square vs. non square pixels? Maybe I need to go back to my original intent. My end game is to play my rendered file on a mac and view on an attached projector in a 4:3 format. I’ve found our macs handle the mp4 formats very well, mpgs not so much so I tend to always render out to mp4s. We also burn these files to a DVD for playing through that medium.
What is a good initial project template and what would be a good render template? If you could provide some suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.

[Larry Cole] “When would one use square vs. non square pixels?”

It all depends on the playback device. If you were making a DVD, you would maintain the non-square pixels because a TV/DVD player will display them correctly. If you want to play back on a PC/Mac, you would use square pixels because computer screens have square pixels and the player software usually assumes that all pixels are square.

A good project template would match the media so I would use the NTSC DV project template. For DVD your render template should be MPEG2 with the NTSC DVD setting. For a PC/Mac you should use MainConcept AVC MP4 and convert to square pixels using one of the “Internet” templates.
