  • Why does Premiere slow with larger cache?

I understand why a corrupt cache could slow Premiere, but why the overall size?

I had a project with about 100gb of 4k footage. At first my surface book 2 laptop could edit it fine. But as the project got larger it eventually got to the point where it couldn’t play even at 1/4 res even in the source monitor. As a test I deleted the source files except 15 or so and there was no change. I deleted the cache and let it rebuild for this smaller number of files and it went back to playing smoothly. So it seems to me that the number of files in the project panel is not the problem, but rather the number of files the cache is referencing.

Any idea why that is or if there’s some way to avoid this slow down besides splitting projects? I feel like the splitting projects solution is not only inconvenient but also mysterious, when should I split?

    Thanks!

Including some details about your setup would be helpful.

    – OS, CPU, RAM
    – GPU
    – What kind of storage and how is it connected
    – Where do you keep your cache
    – What kind of 4k footage, and are you using proxies

You should be cleaning your cache every day (Preferences>Media Cache>Delete unused cache files).

    Surface Book 2 isn’t exactly a workhorse…

Premiere Pro has a setting to delete Cache every # Days or delete the oldest files when the Cache Exceeds # MBs or GBs.

    It’s in the settings.
