I have a system (P4 centrino, 1.7 ghz, 512 Ram, 2mb L2 Cache, Widescreen, single 60 gb harddisk) Premiere Pro runs with great difficulty on this system. In fact very often the machine just hangs. I want to evaluate the software before i can buy. But i was very depressed at the outcome. I took a small clip. About 1 min in duration. Resolution 786 by 420 or so approx. File is not all that big. Its just about 30 mb file size or much lesser if im right. I apply one colour correction filter and the system just froze. Whats the use of a software that cant even do this. Im sure theres something wrong somewhere. Is it because im working out of a single hard disk machine. Heres the best part. I load the same video in WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER. And it does the same colour correction etc. And renders like a dream in about few mins. my machine runs 3ds Max and such complex renders. I load the same video onto a plane geometry to simulate a layer. And add all sorts of effects. A radial blur along with film grain etc within man which has more parameters and complex adjustments. AND IT RENDERS FINE. The only draw back is the two programs that work fine wont allow fine tuning etc like they ony have preset colour correction levels etc. But the logic is ? Why does premiere hang. Ive heard its a very good software. Why is it more demanding than 3d MAX ? And why are other programs able to do the job easier. Please help me someone !

It’s not the software that’s the problem. Processing video is a massively processor intensive task and requires plenty of horsepower to work well. The hardware used is very important and Adobe specify the minimum and recommended specs for Premier Pro.

Windows Movie Maker can’t really be compared to Prem Pro – they’re in entirely different leagues.

There are many reasons for the programme not running as expected but there are many thousands of users that are using Premier Pro for professional use on a daily basis.

Your system problems could be cause from a few different things.

First – what format is your source file? DV? Uncompressed? Mpeg? If it is Uncompressed or even DV your notebook hard drive may not be fast enough (most notebook drives are only 4200rpm or max 5400rpm and you really need a 7200rpm drive to get a good transfer rate). A co-worker of mine tried to edit DV footage on his laptop and we could not get it to work smoothly until we used a firewire attached 7200rpm hard drive. If you are trying to edit an Mpeg you should look into the Mainconcept plugin for PPro as PPro on its own does not favor Mpegs at all and have cause my system to repeatedly hang until I purchaced Mainconcept.

The reason Windows Movie Maker works as it converts everything to a WMV which is what it edits natively, Premiere does DV natively. 3dsMax is a whole other world that is not for video so I am not going to go there.

Just make sure when you edit in Premiere that you are using a DV Format file and be sure your hard drive that maintain a high enough transfer rate to play back smoothly.

    Hope that helps.

But do you think my processor is not suffecient. Its at least above the minimum specs right. 1.7 ghz is not a bad machine (i think). Heres the best part (though i think im repeating it again and again. LOL. Im talking about a 1 minute clip. Normal AVI. Small size. About 20 mb. And it cant handle that ? Im surprised ! Then i tried an mpeg2 file which was transfered from a DV pro camera down into mpeg2. The damn thing just froze 23 times in a row. Since that day ive never opened premiere pro. Its too depressing to have it hand for such small things. I woudl like you to ask you to think again on what you said about WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER. I wont claim im in a professional league as many of you here. But im a serious student of 3d. And have officially done my 3ds max course etc. So i know (and completely agree) that WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER and PREMIERE PRO are a totally different league. But i was comparing that a mediocre program like MOVIE MAKER can handle this, and why cant premiere pro. Windows Movie Maker even handles large size mpegs, avis, EVEN UNCOMPRESSED FORMAT ! But the reason im so enthusiastic to slove this issue is because i really want to learn premiere pro in detail. But this is discouraging me. Please give me your opinion.

I also have one more doubt. My main purpose is to only edit and burn dvds. For commercial purposes. Im not gong to edit more than dvd resolution. So which other editing program can i get that will be sufficient for this purpose. Is there anything simpler and easier to use like sony vegas etc. Something thats very reliable and somewhere between the premiere pro and windows moviemaker segment ? Thanks a ton guys.

Get an external drive, firewire or USB2. 7200RPM. Keep your materials off the primary drive. Bump your ram up, if you can afford it. Your processor’s a bit underpowered. Vegas will run in your machine because it’s designed for minimum platforms. However, when it comes to rendering out the final project you will pay the price for not having the hardware. It will take a very long time to complete.
Premiere, Vegas, Edius and even FCP are entirely at the mercy of computer’s specs.

But rendering time doesnt matter LKJ ! Because my clips are hardly 5 mins long in total composition (maybe some 25 clips of few secs duration) I only do triler type of videos and the max res output i need is only for dvd resolution. In my experience that is a short duration and more of domestic resolution requirement. But how user friendly is vegas ? Does it have good effects etc ? How is the quality of the output. Also how is the quality of the chroma etc ?
