  • Why does my motion blur look wrong?

    Hello everyone,

I’m using AE CS3 and my motion blur is just looking awful. I’ve used it many times in the past to great effect, but for this project, it’s just looking really bad. Here’s an example:

    No motion blur

    With motion blur

So as you can see, it’s really not blurring anything. It’s just adding an offset transparency layer that ends up making everything looking “stutter”-y. In this comp, I’ve got the castle footage pre-comped (it’s two psd files with their motion blur switch on) and a text layer. Those are the only two items that I have motion blurred. The only moving component is the camera; the image of the castle and text are static. So what could it be? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I could be way off, but it looks like a shutter angle or shutter phase issue to me. Go to Composition settings > Advanced tab. Check the Shutter angle and shutter phase.

    The default settings are:
    Shutter Angle: 180
    Shutter Phase: 0
    Samples Per Frame: 16
    Adaptive Sample Limit: 128

Let me know if this helps or not.

    Jeremy,

Thanks! I didn’t know you could control the motion blur in those ways. For some reason, my Samples per Frame were set at 2. I have no idea why, but it was set that way. After correcting it, I got that nice motion blur that I love! Thanks a lot!
