  • Why does FCP think this media is offline?

This is not a critical problem but it’s nagging and I hope the answer might help me to better understand how FCP works (now that I’ve been using it forever…).

I have a .png graphic file in a project. After a couple days of editing, I made a change to the graphic and saved it to the same location with the same name. Normally, FCP will recognize such a revised file and “accept” it in the project. In this case, though, the clip of this file on the timeline turned red and said the media is offline. However, the graphic still played and rendered properly.

But the red notice bugged me. So I deleted that clip. I also deleted the clip in the browser. And I deleted it from two other sequences where it appeared. Then I restarted FCP re-imported the file from the Finder and tried to put the replacement clip on the timeline. It still turns red, says the media is offline, but plays the clip properly.

Wassup with that? I am using FCP 7. Thanks.

Maybee you changed the PNG while when your FCP project was open?

When you see the clip but the thumbnail is RED/OFFLINE,
Just trash your thumbnail cache files.

And, there it is: The answer that taught me something.

    Thanks, Paul!

Next time ‘tell’ FCP you’re making a change by choosing to ‘open in editor’

You shouldn’t have to do that. There’s a preference in user settings to automatically reconnect changed files or something like that.
