Why does FCP have tone at -12
Posted by Matt Carl on October 15, 2008 at 1:04 amAlright I have done a lot of searching through past threads and have yet to find a satisfactory answer to my question, why does FCP set its bar tone to -12? I work in a professional production environment and have ALWAYS seen Digital tone set at -20 which matches Analog tone of 0 db. Where in the world did they get -12 db from and why????

“Because.”
It’s been -12 since Version 1. No clue why, but it has been. I always change it to -18 or -20 depending on what I’m laying off.

October 15, 2008 at 5:14 pmHi:
FCP has always had it’s nominal levels at -12dB because of the popularity of DVCAM. That’s right, recall how Sony decided to that 0dB analog equals -12dB digital with your good old DVCAM deck? I am staring at the audio meters on my DSR-40 here and yes, they do have a notch at -12dB.
Recall that MiniDV/DVCAM and to an extent, DVCPro were the first low end, professional digital video formats back in the early days of FCP? Back then, you really didn’t have too many people operating FCP with DBeta decks, those people were all still on AVID Media Composers.
I agree, it is weird and somewhat arbitrary but that was the reason why.
It is a remnant from the early days of FCP and DVCAM. It would be nice when they do a total, from the ground up re-write of FCP to get it back to -20dB like every other pro application and hardware on the market.

Or simply have a check box under System settings to allow the user to set globally the nominal reference tone they want to use.

“Now, Warren… You know that would make too much sense.
