  • Why does an imported clip need rendering b4 any editing?

    Hi guys,
I’ve just installed FCP & Premiere Pro on mu MBP (4GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, 2.5 GHz CPU, 512 MB GRAM).

I have to rip 40 dvds for a client, to cut out intro, outro and a few blocks in the middle of each.

Unfortunately, I have a few probs.

I used Handbrake as the ripper and set the output to MPG4 – which is giving both premiere and FCP a lot of probs opening. No I’ve ripped another test DVD, but this time in AVI using the XviD compressor.
Premiere says it doesn’t support the compression. And FCP leaves both Video and Audio unrendered. Trying to render both sound and video takes 4 hours!

Something must be wrong, but where did I take a wrong turn?

Why can’t I just take the clip straight into the timeline and start cutting without rendering first?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Best Regards

    Ron

Yes, MP4 is not an editing codec. Rip them to DV or some other standard codec like 8bit uncompressed and then edit. We do this all the time with MPEG Streamclip.
