Why does AE play my imported footage so slow?
Posted by Paul Dajic on February 4, 2009 at 5:38 pmI am used to Motion where I pull in an apple pro res file and it plays smoothly. This is before I add any special effect. Why does AE CS4 play my clip so slow and choppy? How do I fix that? I realize this may be a remedial question and I apologize in advance.

February 4, 2009 at 6:16 pmhit zero on the numbers pad to have ae create a ram preview. when the preview is cached to ram it should play out in realtime regardless of the complexity of the comp.
as to why prores performs better with apple software… well it’s apple’s codec on apple’s product vs. apple’s codec on adobe’s product. not to mention ae has never tried to be realtime, so it may have something to do with ae caching the standard preview to disk prior to ‘previewing’ rather than just reading the media straight from the drive….

February 4, 2009 at 6:26 pmKevin and Dave. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your insight. I have a mac pro with 12gb of ram and its an 8 core. I thought it was supposed to be real time. Do I need to diable the “open gl” as well? And do you recommend I change something in preferences to get better performance. Again, I cant thank you enough. Your community of experts is impressive. I am working with 1080i footage.

February 4, 2009 at 7:21 pmpersonally i would disable opengl in the preview prefs and use adaptive resolution.
also, if you haven’t already, enable ‘render multiple frames simultaneously’ in the multiprocessing prefs. if you have cs4, you might also limit the number of processors available to 6 cores (the recommended equation for number of processors is the total gb of ram divided by 2 will equal the number of cores to use, so, 12gb / 2 = 6…)

February 4, 2009 at 9:57 pmAgain, thank you. I am sure you both hear it often, but we are grateful for your time and advice. The files are avchd 1080i (1920×1080) converted to pro-res in final cut pro (studio 2). You can be certain that I have printed this off and will save it for future use as well as share it with friends. I am very new to AE and figured it was me. It mostly was, but it does appear that there are some tips to operate it more effectively.
I will be trying this out this evening for sure. I wish I could right now. I just need to change my mindset from how I work with Motion. Thank you again for your time.

June 8, 2009 at 7:11 pmHey guys:
I think the question is more: what can I do with video clips I have altered in AE that don’t play at the right speed? Can I fix them to be used with AP cs4?
Can anyone help? -
