  • Why do I need Tri Level Sync? – Multibridge Studio v Extreme

Posted by Don Poe on December 13, 2005 at 7:04 pm

    Hi –

I see one of the big reasons to jump up to the Multibridge Studio over the MB Extreme is the Tri Level Sync Generator that comes built into the Studio.

The tri-level generator will generate sync for all the various HD formats, 720P and 1080i and so on. I currently have a black burst generator that only generates sync for SD NTSC. If I am only digging HDV through FW, it doesn’t seem like I would need to reference the MultiBridge to the deck. But, under what circumstances would I need to sync the Mutibridge to the deck or anything else in my room? I am guessing that if I had an HDCAM deck hooked up via SDI I might need it, but this is new territory for me. Could someone educate me?

    Thanks! Don

It seems to me when you compare the chart of both models, they both do Tri Level Sync.

On the Avid list someone had emailed BM directly and they said that really only the Studio generates tri-level. Can someone at BM state if the Extreme also does this or not.

    Thanks again!

without going into a 20 page description, if you have 2:3:3:2 pulldown on your VTR (like the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A, or the Sony JH-3), your program will play out at 59.94 into the FCP system, so you will NOT edit in 24p mode, and you DO NOT need tri level sync. You only need tri sync if you are working in 23.98 or 24p mode, and unless you are finishing for theatrical release, I see no reason to do this. A nice boring black generator will work just fine, as long as you keep your material at 59.94, and not 23.98.

The Multibridge Studio WILL have tri level sync. The only times I have been forced to use a tri level sync gen (like the Evertz 7750, or the Ensemble or the Astro Systems) is when someone ACCIDENTALLY wound up with 24p tapes and
a VTR like the HDW-M2000/10, which DOES NOT HAVE 2:3 pulldown as an option. THEN you need tri level sync.
