Why Can’t I Save as .EDL?
I really hope I can find the answer I’m looking for here.
I’m an avid Sony Vegas user and have been for several years, and I was looking for a way to transfer my timeline between Vegas and Adobe After Effects, which I use for my heavy special effects. Eventually, I stumbled upon articles talking about saving my Vegas file as a .EDL text file, then using various scripts and mumbo jumbo to get it imported into AE.
I have all of that figured out and ready to go (theoretically), but I can’t even complete the very first step because Vegas isn’t allowing me to save the file as anything but .VF. There is no other extension listed in the drop-down menu. Is this because of which version of Vegas I’m using? Is it a bug? Am I doing something wrong?
I am using Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0.

Yes. Movie Studio does not support EDL. You need Vegas Pro for that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do instead? Or is getting Pro my best bet for a smooth ride here?

Movie Studio is really a home hobbyist tool. If you need to support a production pipe-line with other applications like After Effects, you really need to get the Pro version to get the project exchange capability.

Ok. Aren’t there things Pro can’t do that Movie Studio can or is better at, though? I seem to recall downloading a trial of Pro at one point and not liking it as much, but I could be crazy. The name indicates it SHOULD have everything Movie Studio has, and then some.

Vegas Pro is a super-set of Movie Studio but you do loose the Make Movie button so Pro expects you to understand how to use the render templates without assistance. So you do loose some of the assistance that Movie Studio gives you but it retains all of what you have learned and, of course, gives you a lot more functionality to learn.

Alright, awesome. I’m very familiar with the rendering process so I shouldn’t need that sort of aid. I’ve never even used that Make Movie button on Movie Studio anyway, haha. Thanks for your help.
