  • Why aren’t my particles behaving as I’d originally set them up to before using Layer Map?? Help!

Posted by Gizmo1990 on February 11, 2006 at 5:03 pm

I’ve setup some particles along a path and they’re behaving exactly how I want them.

However, when I apply my own layer map to the particles using Layer Map/Use Layer, I’m getting very different results??

There seem to be a lot more particles and their direction seems haphazard? Basically they don’t appear anything like the little red default particles? I was expecting each red dot to simply be replaced by my newly assigned layer map?

Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong here?

    Any help really appreciated.

Investigating some more and it seems/appears that when I apply my layer map all the particles positions are being scaled up!!??

Here’s a comparison to display what I’m getting:

Argh why is this happening! Please help someone.

On your layer map, is the anchor point right in the middle of your glowy sparkle? It should be.

    Thanks for the reply RobotHero.

Yes it is in the exact center.

I’ve started my comp again and so far its not doing it… though I’m not changing many of pp’s parameters.

I don’t understand why it was doing it though??

That was the only thing I could think of that would be tied into the layer map.

Change one parameter at a time until you see it happen again.

The particles appear to change direction twice. How were you doing that? The first direction change seems to line up both versions, but the second is different.

Okay first of all, try to be a little clearer when you are describing your problem. It took me a little to realize that you are talking about Particle Playground. What happens when you turn on layer map in PP is that AE takes each particle and replaces it with the layer that you are refering too. Now it is doing just that in the jpeg you provided, the only problem is that the layer is too big. The Gotcha that you are experiencing comes from the way AE thinks. When you refer to a layer in effect, it looks at that layer as it is, when brought to the Composition, before all the transform properties and effects are applied to it. The simple workaround that would be to precomp the layer and apply any effect or transform properties in the precomp.
    Hope this Helps
