  • Why are my titles ‘blocky’ when appearing from a feathered mask?

Posted by Gizmo1990 on January 25, 2006 at 10:32 am

I’ve been following George Polevoy’s Flowing title effect tutorial and I managed to replicate it.

However as my title forms from its flowing state it appears to become very blocky and the graphics appear to shear? I’ve got all my layers set to high quality and I’ve checked that the feathered mask I’m using is ok and it appears normal.

I’ve uploaded an example of the problem here:

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

    Any help much appreciated.

is the jpg from the rendered output or just a snap shot from TL/software … if looks like a low res frame … 4:1:1 color space does have stair stepping on titles but it should NOT be that bad …

you could change the properties and try rendering titles out as progressive …

also you could render them out as uncompressed ( 4:4:4) and they will be PERFECT – if you do get the stair stepping then it’s something with the software …

once you render out uncompressed then drop them in TL for final render with rest of project.

    Thanks for your reply Dave.

I’ve checked my comps and they are all in the same resolution. Actually the effect is made up entirely from inside AE, no external footage, so I don’t think thats the problem. 🙁

I agree nothing looks great at 200% but I really don’t think the effect should be producing this blockyness, there’s no reason for it as I can see.

Would you be willing to take a look at the file? I’d really appreciate it. If so please email me at gizmo.1990@hotmail.com and I’ll send you the file.

    Thanks for the reply donatello.

The shot was just a quick grab from AE.

Sorry but I don’t understand what you mean by 4:1:1 color space?

The text I’m using is just Effects/Basic Text?

I’ve tried rendering out a single frame as a TGA, ie umcompressed and it still looks the same. 🙁

Would you be willing to look at the file perhaps? If so please email me at gizmo.1990@hotmail.com and I will send you the file.

Thanks again for your reply Dave.

The res I’m working in is 640X480. It should look fine?

I’ve also tried turning off opengl by turning my hardware acceleration to none and still no change.

I think it must be something to do with my titles or maybe my masks feather but it all looks fine to me!?

Would anybody be prepared to look at my file (its only small, 80k) and see if they can spot what I’m doing wrong!?

Please any help is really appreciated.

Try setting the project to 16-bit, and see if your preview resolution is set to ‘half’.
