Why are FCP Windows black when playing?
This message is on behalf of a friend and he hasn’t given me all the relevant info. He says when he is watching footage (i’m not sure if its source or timeline) the window is black. However, he says there is tiny horizontal trip at the top of the window where you can just make out that the video is playing underneath. Any ideas whats going on?

I would suspect that your friend is seeing black windows on playback because he has external video enabled, and video playback disabled.
Get your friend to check the settings on the following menu items:
