  • Why am I Losing Render Files?

Posted by Chris Babbitt on August 4, 2009 at 5:49 pm

I’m working in an XDCAM-EX timeline. FCP 6.0.6., rendering to ProRes, and my render files keep disappearing. This seems to mostly pertain to clips where SmoothCam has been applied. I will render the clips, continue working, and then later on, I will notice that those clips are unrendered again. This has been occurring ever since I have been working with HD. I can’t remember this ever happening in SD projects. Is this some kind of bug?

Smooth Cam analysis, at least in FCP 6.x, works on the entire piece of media…so if you use another part of the same media file elsewhere, it messes up your Smoothcam analysis. Best way around that is to export a self contained Quicktime of just the part you are using, and let Smoothcam work its magic on that…and also , for safety, you might want to make a self contained Quicktime of the finished product too.

I think I remember reading this, and much of render management, has been improved in FCP 7, but I have not upgraded yet.

That makes since, although in my case, this is happening with completely unrelated files.

I would recommend exporting a self contained Quicktime, after you re-render it. Hopefully, FCP 7 fixes these oddities.

While exporting a self contained will prevent further unnecessary analysis, I never found a way for FCP to stop losing the smoothcam renders in FCP6. Haven’t had a chance to test with fcp7

    7 doesn’t fix it… I seem to re-render almost every day.

currently on a MacBookPro, using FCP 7.0.1, ProResLT from Firewire (4 TB of incredible footage) and a simple DVI out to the monitor- things are getting simpler.

Yeah, it’s still busted with FCP7 Smoothcams. Annoying as all get out.

I have had the same problem. Every time I quit the program and come back, all renders of smoothcam shots are gone. Today, something new happened: I actually SAW the red render line reappear two minutes after turning on the program, and this happened while applying a random motion change (scale) to a shot on the timeline. I’m “glad” to hear it has been happening to other people and not just me because I thought maybe I’m going slightly mad 🙂

Has anyone figured out a solution to this?

I think the solution must come from Apple, unless you export and reimport the rendered material as hard media.

Back on FCP6 all renders used to come undone and Apple eventually fixed it with a point release.

I encourage you to send feedback to Apple often about this problem.

I’m also having this problem. I’ve tried exporting the bits I want to do smoothcam on then reimporting but then those clips lose their render files as well.

I’ve tried putting Smoothcam first in the filter chain and last in the filter chain, doesn’t seem to make any difference. Can’t work out any pattern to it all.

I can render a sequence, save, export a QT for use in idvd, quit FCP and then have idvd tell me the sequence has lost it’s render file.

The file actually seems to vanish, it doesn’t go to the trash and it’s not in the render folder.

I’m so angry, it’s added of hours of time to my project and it’s still pot-luck regarding if when I’ll actually be able to finish it.

You have to make those movies that you export with SmoothCam as self-contained.
