  • Why am I constantly linking files whenever I open a project?!

    Hi,
I have searched for this, but can’t find a satisfactory answer:

Why do I have to relink lots of files in my project EVERY SINGLE TIME I open it?

Admittedly, the files are spread over various folders on several network drives, and if they were all in the same folder, this wouldn’t be a problem.

But even when I’ve linked all the files, done stuff in the project and saved it and exited, when I next come back into the project, although the drive letters haven’t changed, and the files haven’t moved anywhere, I have to link ALL of the files again. Arrrrgghh!

I could of course move the files to a local folder, but they are large (10Gb files), and it takes time/space to copy them, and then there would be dulpicates etc.

Is there anything that I can do to make it so Premiere remembers where the files are from the last ‘linking session’?!

    Many thanks in advance,
    Victoria

you might want to use project manager to make a new copy of the project, all in one folder. It can take a while to process, but it can save you time and frustration later. Just make sure the new project is good, then delete the old one. Personally I delete the large media files but keep the old project/title files just in case.

Do you need to relink if the machine is left on and PPro is simply closed and reopened, or only if the machine has been powered off?

Does the network where the assets are stay constantly connected?

…I’m wondering if the project may or may not have some weird sort of corruption? Try importing the project into another project and relinking, and then try to open it later and see if that helps…

It still smacks of something to do with the network though…

It doesn’t happen when the project it just closed then reopened, without shutting the computer down.
If I rename folders, it also does it, but just once for each folder.

The network drives disconnect on shutting the computer down, but I reconnect them before opening Premiere, although this doesn’t make any difference to whether the files on the network drives need locating.

It doesn’t help to import the project into another project.

If only Premiere was as good at file management as After Effects!

    Thanks for the help.
