I’m finally upto colorgrading my project, and after a couple of ‘test exports’ ive noticed a really big difference in saturation and contrast in the exported quicktime file, compared to the preview fcp gives you.
as this will become a really big issue when colorgrading i was wondering if anyone knew about this.
whos telling the truth? quicktime or fcp?
im guessing quicktimes color will be more real as this is the final product.
but then how am i to grade? is it possible to get fcp to show a more true color preview?
    any help would be amazing.

Also on a side note to any color graders out there.
does anyone trust the self calibration wizard on the imac screens?
ive gone through it the best i could, but image still looks a little dark and contrasted.
was going to get a CRT monitor aswell to compare between them.
    any tips.

    cheers

[chi chi desmond] “whos telling the truth? quicktime or fcp?”

Nether the ONLY way to correctly judge the color of a video is a calibrated broadcast monitor. A computer monitor is no way to judge the color of a video.

Do a search on the cow and you will find lots of info as to why you need a calibrated broadcast monitor.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

You must use a properly calibrated external monitor to judge picture and color quality from Final Cut Pro. The Canvas and Viewer are proxy images at best. FCP expects you to have a proper external monitor to work with.

We run the AJA Kona 3 video cards in all our suites connected to FSI LCD color reference monitors. (1760W and 2450W). You should never use the Viewer or Canvas to judge anything in the image quality in FCP.

If you have a big difference between FCP and the Quicktime Player you probably didn’t activate the “Enable Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility” in the General Tab of your Quick Time Player Preferences.
