Who is using new 8 core systems? Also Media Drives? SATA?
Posted by Wrongbeachph on October 12, 2007 at 5:51 pmIm looking to upgrade my system and want to know if anyone is having issues with the new 8 dual core systems, as well as what is everyone using for media drives? I have an old SCSI setup but want to upgrade to either SATA if they work well, or fiber…which is very expensive….any help would be great thks…

October 12, 2007 at 6:27 pmI’m sitting at a new 8-core.
Issues? Yes. Unusual or attributed to the 8-core, I don’t know. I’ve had several issues with compressor and final cut not seeming to talk to each other, aborting exports using, compressed files that never appear, markers that don’t show up, MPEG files that stop in the middle of playing inside DVDSP, trashed files that can’t be moved out of the trash –pretty buggy really. Is this FCS2, QT, 8-core or Apple? You guess. Some help from Apple, but no fixes. I’ve seen a lot similar on the forums. They’ve already released a firmware update, but like all their upgrades I’m nervous about applying until I get wind of it’s effect from other more daring adventurers.Renders are much faster in FCP. Using Cluster to Compress is dreamy fast. Changes the workflow. 2 hour shows aren’t an overnight render anymore.
Check your power availability. The 8-core has a 12 amp supply. We had to buy a bigger UPS that set us back nearly another $1,000.
Storage?
I’m scratchin on that one. We’ve had xRAID for 3.5 yrs and haven’t had good luck with it, although rumor is that it’s very reliable. The newer xRAIDs are a tad faster, but haven’t really changed their technology. Dulce sounds promising to us for a single station (speed and value) as well as studio network solutions for multiple stations.

October 12, 2007 at 6:51 pmFor media drives we’re running MaxxDigital 8TB SAS/SATA arrays here. Almost 500MB/s in RAID 5 mode.
We also have LaCie S2S SATA systems that we use on our third edit system. Around 150MB/s and also very good.

October 12, 2007 at 7:22 pmWe’re using Ciprico 4210 Fibre Channel (what can I say, it handles everything we throw at it)
We’re about to purchase a Caldigit S2VR-HD 5TB sata array.

That’s a killer fibre channel box for sure. For Fibre Channel I would definitely look at them and Facilis.

All I’m going to say is I’ve had very very bad experiences with those systems.

Walter did you get a chance to test one out?
an actual S2VR-HD and not the Duo or FW versions?A few of my local friends have them and had great
success with the 1 TB model.Shane R. and Bob Z. are reporting excellent performance
and reliability as well.Is there some sort of card conflict that HBA causes?

October 12, 2007 at 7:33 pmWalter had issues with the S2VR HD and the S2VR duo. I had no issues with either one. I used the Duo (and still do) for all my editing needs….ran like a champ for my last HD project.
But I have had bad experiences with LaCie drives (HORRIBLE experiences) and Walter hasn’t…so…go figure.
I am looking to upgrade though, to the HD PRo from Caldigit. Better speeds, and RAID 5…which is important. Tired of running Raid 0 and having footage backed up on firewire drives…waste of space.

October 12, 2007 at 7:51 pmOur 3 suites have been running on 2 xserves for almost 3 years, and no problems. LaCie, on the other hand… Don’t get me started. 90% failure rate in our experiences. scads of footage gone to the wind. 5 of the 10 drives we had were power supply failures, so hte drives were recoverable, other 4 that failed, the drives crashed. I won’t work on any business related projects unless it is some sort of raid setup. we even have 2 sans digital 2 bay drive enclosures that we run raid mirrored for our location jobs.
Drives are cheap, we take the chance.

you can do Raid 5 and still do uncompressed 10-bit HD with the S2VR-HD can’t you?
