July 21, 2005 at 11:05 pmOK here it comes.
What do cameramen expect from lens apart from glass, coatings and good mechanism is a Manual Lens Controls.
If You look at Sony Z1 or Pana200,it is very hard to manually focus and it is difficul to quickly change the exposure…on the other hand this new basic Fujinon lens for new JVC HD100 does it all.
I talked to Canon people at SMPTE 05 in Sydney and was told they would have 2 similar lenses for their new canon XL-3 camera.
My advice would be to buy JVC hd100-in Australia they sold the first shipment of 90.
I hope it helps.

July 21, 2005 at 11:49 pmNice lense on the JVC but the hdv compression lets the camera down.
These small cheap HD cameras are not aimed at replacing big Varicam or HDCAM cameras, if you need great lenses and good compression then rental is the way to go for your main camera it is a case of cost effective balance.
It should also be pointed out you do not have to buy the P2 camera if it does not feed your needs but i am certainly very interested in buying one.

July 22, 2005 at 2:55 amI hear ya, I guess we are dealing with a cost of production issue. How much can they give us for a cost we can swallow… I too like better zoom and focus controls for manuel use but, for the price I take what I am given.
I have looked at but not used the lens which Panasonic will include with the 200 and have played with the Z1 lens. From a control point of view they all look of the same family, you might call it the lower priced family, they work.

July 22, 2005 at 3:04 amFrom what I can tell, the Panasonic fixed lens is in a class above Sony’s fixed lenses. The focus ring on Sony fixed lenses feels to me, like wet cabbage as you’ve got to give it a good turn to work, and then it sort of turns by the amount you want, but never quite. If you turn them slowly enough, they never seem to do anything. I’m told that Panasonic’s implementation is done so that you can turn the focus ring at whatever speed or distance and the focus will react, until you go out of range where you dial will still keep turning. That means you can put a real follow focus on a Panasonic and it will work, whereas you can’t with a Sony. I just got a nice lens on a Canon 20D, and it works similarly. You turn it, and it works just like a real manual focus until you reach the end of the lens’ movement, and then it just keeps turning, but within it’s range, it works and feels just like a manual focus. This is just one way Panasonic is keeping quality up and price down. I see little point in the JVC approach of cheap camera and expensive replacement lenses. If you’re into full HD lenses, why on earth would you put a compressed to hell HDV back on it?

Why would You design the lens like that for Video Camera??
What kind of benefit do You see in this??
Why is not Panasonic or Sony or Thomson or Ikegami or …………using this kind of “superior” technology??
I am amazed to hear this from forum leader.
What You are saying is stupid and I really mean this.
Using and designing lenses like that is not usual in Video or Film.
Sorry for my outburst.

Jiri, not to pick a fight here but you can say this about the Sony as it does exist and you may have actually tried to use it. However to put the HVX and its lens in the same sentence and cast the same “knowldege” about it is a little ludicrous, since you have not been able to try it and thus, you could not “know” this for a fact.
Just pointing out the obvious,

July 22, 2005 at 2:02 pmWhy? Because it’s cheaper, which means that more people can afford the camera. If I needed the macho posturing of a “real” lens, I’d buy a blinkin Varicam or whatever…..
It’s fine to rant on about needing real lenses and all that, but the practical reality is that very few people can afford them. Panasonic have the Varicam for people who “need” a real lens. For those of us who just want to shoot decent quality HD, in a decent quality codec, for a decent amount of money, we’ll just use the HVX200 instead.

July 23, 2005 at 1:10 amI saw the “model” at SMPTE 05.
I was also talking about it with Japanese engineer.
So since You did not answer my question about CCD in camera month ago,I can unofficially say Pana 200 will have 1.2mega pixel block. It will not be CMOS.
That said, lets wait, perhaps this Japanese gentleman was giving me some real information.I do not want to pick up any fight here.I was sitting around with other
cameramen.Everyone liked Pana 200 camera…except for one thing-LENS.
So Jan,if You want to sell twice as many units, give it a lens it deserves.
Just simple piece of glas like on JVC.Basic Lens on JVC is cheap.
Lens one can swap for another one.

July 23, 2005 at 1:25 amGraeme,
JVC’s BASIC 5.5 zoom lens is CHEAP!They even give away for FREE Wide Lens adaptor for next two months.JVC made very good deal with Fujinon.
What is expansive is 3.5 mm WIDE lens.At $US12,000 it is a lot of many,BUT
standard lens is cheap.
Especially if You compare cost of Z1 to JVChd100(with free adapter).Mate,I like Pana200 and the concept behind it.
I just wish it had another 3 things(please I do not want to start any arguments).
1)Lenses like on JVC hd-100 or upcoming Canon XL-3.
2)Same camera design like JVC-it is great shoulder camera.
3)HDV recording as well. One thing I wish JVC camera had,was nice 1.5′ WF like on Panasonic.
Another great feature on JVC would be P2 with true HD recording.Well I agree you get what You pay for.
Finally Jan(if You are reading this),I must say the best value for my money
in High End is New Pana HDX 400,an excellent value for money.
Kind Regards to You all-jiri vrozina
