  • White Slug on All Frames external video playback

    Hey Everyone,
I’ve searched through many other threads about external video, but unfortunately I’ve been following the help steps you have given and still nothing.

My problem is this, I recently bought a Mac Pro 3.2GHz 8-Core, 2GB 800MH RAM (waiting for my other 16 from OWC), 2 ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics cards, two 23″ Cinema displays, Leopard and FCP 6.0.2. I have always used a seconds monitor for a Full screen preview at my school which also had Mac Pro’s with 2 3GHz processors, 4GB of 667MH RAM, and one graphics card (not sure on the model, but I do know they only had 256GB of GDDR3). I even used this procedure on a couple G5’s and had no problem. What’s happening now is that my second monitor will only display a white slug when I play footage, but will still play audio. This is the same for HDV 720 footage and for regular DV/NTSC DVX footage. However, when I use the Full Screen display on my MAIN monitor, it works and plays back. When I select the Full Screen Preview and then instead of selecting “All Frames” I choose “Show Current Frame it displays the frame. Could this be from my dual graphics cards? If so, does anyone know a way to fix this and have it work with 2 cards? I understand this is such a weird question, so sorry. Thanks a lot.

I’m having the exact same issue right now, except I have the older 8-core mac pro. I just recently put in a second video card (2600XT), and I’m driving a 42″ lcd off that. I get the white screen when trying to preview as well. If I take the canvas from FCP and drag it up to the lcd, I can maximize that and it looks fine, however, the preview does not work.

    Did you ever solve this?

Unfortunately not, I asked three or four of my professors and none had ever encountered it. I’m thinking it’s something with Leopard or the Graphics cards. I plan on calling Apple very soon and will post a response if i get a solution. sorry again.

Definitely let me know if you find something 🙂 The funny thing is that it works fine in Motion 3, just not in FCP…

I guess the only workaround is to put the canvas on there, but that’s not even really a workaround… 🙁

I too am having the same issue, and i regret ever moving to final cut studio and apple…

Color is also crashing repeatedly with two graphics cards and three monitors, one of which is my video monitor… I have a mac pro early 2008 2.8, 6 g ram and two ati’s 2600 xt updated to the latest firmware…

Has there been no update on this? I’m having a similar issue where I get a white screen when I play back certain project. Works fine on all my HD project. Just the SD 4×3 project I get a white screen on my 3rd cinema display.

Look forward to hearing your solution!

Anyone had any luck on a proper fix for this? Extremely annoying…

    One workaround I’ve discovered…

Go into Sequence Settings and set to the following (this worked with my 16×9 DV PAL footage):
Frame Size: 1024×576, Aspect Ratio: Custom
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square, uncheck Anamorphic 16:9
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 HQ

Your footage will be squished, so to fix you’ll need to go into the motion tab of one of your clips and set Scale to 143, and Distort to -43.

Copy and Paste Attributes to the rest of your clips.

Don’t know why but for some reason those particular settings seem to work without requiring any rendering.

Hope this is helpful to someone.
