White screens after upgrade to Studio 3
Yes, the dreaded white screens are back. I did an upgrade from Studio 2 to Studio 3 today. Yes, I know I should have done a clean install rather than an upgrade, but this was an emergency.
I now have white viewer & canvas screen. I did a search on this and found numerous others with the same problem. What I didn’t find was the definitive fix to the problem. I’ve done the usual trashing of preferences. The windows are NOT set to alpha but are on RGB. If they are set to alpha/RGB the video can now be seen under the transparent red alpha screen. The video plays out normally through the Kona card and my AJA IO. Everything seems to work normally except for the white screens. I’ve also tried to reset the screen resolution and size preferences. Nothing has worked. I’ve also created a new user. Still NG.
And, of course, I have five spots waiting to be edited with a tight deadline.
Not a good day today…Anyone know the answer to this one?

One possible solution:
Do you have Magic Bullet Colorista? If so, update it and see if the problem goes away. This happened to me, and others, and it fixed the problem (the motion templates in FCP appeared as white screens).Neal Broffman

Nope.
No Colorista installed. I’ve removed all of the Plug-ins for the time being and restarted. Same problem. Removed Perian-same problem. New user-same problem. Screen resolution & color depth-same problem. Trashed prefs-same problem. Repaired permissions-same problem.
Running out of ideas…
I did back up the system drive before upgrading. Looks like I might have to boot from the backup to get through the next round of spots coming in.
I put off upgrading just for the problems early on in this version.This seems to be a common problem with upgrades. Surely someone has found the solution by now?

I installed my cloned system drive and booted from it and everything came up fine. Glad I made a backup before doing the upgrade. I’ll have to deal with the upgraded software later.

Try a new user. Under system prefs, create a new user and open FCP. Guarantee it will fix the problem.
I don’t know what the problem is exactly, but something gets corrupted in the user prefs and creating a new user and using that will fix it.

I tried creating a new user yesterday and it didn’t solve the white screens of agony problem. Still running off of my cloned backup drive today.

Firstly kudos for making a clone. Secondly thanks for providing another reason why it is faster to do a full clean install instead of an upgrade over FCS2. Less haste, more speed as my grandmother used to say.
I guess when you have time to do the proper FCS3 install all will be fine.
