Hey guys, I’m editing 720p 24PN video from an HVX200 in Avid Xpress Pro 5.7.2, and I exported two clips as QT Ref to do a composite in AE CS3. For some reason, when my timeline in AE has a cut between the two 720p video layers, the video flashes white for a frame or two, and sometimes causes AE to crash (‘AE can’t run anymore, you will receive one chance to save before AE closes’ is the gist of what the message says. No error codes are supplied). I can tell that it is the video layer(s) flashing, because the composite has Video1 on the left side of the frame, and Video2 on the right side, with a uniquely shaped feathered mask in between. When RAM previewing (or rendering for output) over this section of the timeline, one Video will flash white, then the other, and normally crash AE.

Is AE CS3 known for issues when cutting between 720p video clips? Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Would rendering from Avid in Animation codec or something similarly ‘lossless’ fix this?

Any tips would be great, thanks guys.

Hmm … off the top of my head, I’d guess that the cause is using reference clips. In my experience, AE has no trouble with 24PN from the HVX normally.

So … rendering to Animation or 8-bit 422, or ProRes HQ should solve it.

There was a glitch rendering to ProRes HQ from AE, but I haven’t heard of any import glitches. Still, Animation might be your best bet.

    Anybody else?

Just tried it out using the animation codec, and the white flashes are gone! Its not every day that a problem is solved that quickly…

    Ah, good.

It sounds like a workaround, though. I’m not sure what the problem is, but at least you came up with a solution that can be suggested to others with the same issue.

That reminds me… one little thing with the animation codec coming out of Avid: When you select animation in the format options, make sure to set that Frame Rate to ‘Current’. I had it set on 24, but my footage was 23.97, so my compositing in AE was off when I brought in the new footage for the first time. Setting the FR to ‘Current’ resolved that issue.
