white balance for hockey game
Hi, I have been asked to shoot an NHL old timers hockey game in HD with my Sony FX1. Does anyone know the proper way to manually set the white balance for an ice rink? Should I use the ice as my white card?

You can use a white card or the white ice… whatever you SAY is white, will be “white.”
The first professional “real TV camera guy” job I had was an “end-zone’ camera for a full “truck crew” for an NHL game, sending the pick-up back to a major market.
BIG “studio” camera, hand-crank zoom on the right hand, manual (of course) focus on the left hand.
Trying to follow-focus and pan/zoom with that puck, from that distance, was a “trial by fire” for me.
If you can shoot THAT well, you’re on your way in this biz!

I have shot a few video podcasts for a team I used to play on with a XL2, I usually white balanced to the dasher boards, if they were white, if not, the ice worked fine for me more often than not. Use the white card if you are at all worried about it coming out correctly.
