White balance drift
Posted by Chris Poisson on May 19, 2007 at 12:56 pmWhen ATW is off, would white balance drift be caused by a camera malfunction? It is about 5 years old, it has 220 hours on it, been well cared for and never dropped.

May 19, 2007 at 11:49 pmSometimes you can get the “effect” of white balance drifting (i.e., color cycling) when shooting under fluorescent lights and using a high shutter speed (like 1/250).
Other than that, no, the white balance should not drift if you’re on PRST or A or B.

May 21, 2007 at 12:19 pmYou need to be a bit more specific about the conditions you are shooting under.
If you’re shooting at dusk/dawn outside, or near a window inside, your whitebalance will “drift” in that the color temperature you are shooting is constantly changing at these times of day. At sunset, if you white balance only once, your image will get continuously bluer as the sun goes down.
If you’re shooting indoors, with controlled lighting and your white balance is constantly changing, then yes you *might* have a problem technically with your camera, though I’ve never seen this.
I think the question remains; what’s going on with your lighting sources?

Sonofva! That is EXACTLY the shooting conditions I had when this happened. Shooting at 250 so I could get a shallow DOF under flourescents. I did have a 500 watt softbox on the subject which I thought should overcome the ambient light, but perhaps the combo with the shutter speed was it.
This particular footage is otherwise beautiful, and the drift is at a very regular interval, so now my challenge is the best way to overcome it with color correction, So far, a simple color balance filter seems to give the best control. Any other thoughts? Whatever it is needs to be keyframed.
