I have a new camcorder “Sony CX500V”. I have been filming various clips of my daughter’s hockey team this year and am intending to put together an end of the year DVD for the girls. I recently learned about setting the white balance on the camera. The one touch white balance while zoomed in and focused on a white section of the ice has worked great. I had taken some video a couple of months ago without having set this and therefore the camera was set to auto white balance.

There are several segments that turned out quite yellow/orange. I have tried the color corrector in Vegas. The reduce yellow hue preset does indeed look much better.

I would like to dial things in a bit more however. What is the best way for me to dial in the correct white balance? I would like to match that of the subsequent clips that were shot properly. I am still very much a rookie with Vegas and video editing and do very much appreciate any assistance.

You can set the white balance with the sony color corrector fx.

Add this color corrector fx to your event.
Use the left pipet under the right color wheel to select a part of the event that is supposed to be white. It will become white. If you are not satisfied with the result, just repeat…

Thanks for the reply Theo. I have tried this already and have found that this really doesn’t seem to help all that much. The problem is that in the affected clips, things really look pretty much yellowish and there are no true whites visable. When I click on the yellowish ice, it doesn’t seem to make that much of a change. Of course if I manually change the color wheel, I can make things look much better. I also notice that with the color corrector preset that is designed to reduce yellow color, this adjusts all three of the color wheels (high, mid, and low). Do you or anyone else have any additional tips? I’ll use the preset if this is the best that I can expect. However, I would ultimately like to dial in the white balance to the correct setting. Are there any decent tutorials out there regarding the color corrector fx? I see that there are a number of options (left and right pipets, as well as a number of additional adjustments under the color wheels).

One problem with white balancing via the video image is that, in many situations, there is little to no true white in the image. I rely mainly on the mid tones and try to find something that is close to neutral gray. That is probably more effective than white highlights. You can also adjust for true black by adjusting the low tones.

When shooting, I carry a white board so that the camera can see a true white when performing its adjustment.

Be sure you are picking the sampler on the left of the wheel. If you hover over it, it should tell you that it picks the color complement. The one of the right simply picks the color you click on, and makes all of the highlights that color.

    Excellent tip. Thanks for that!

I have been playing around with the color corrector a bit more and things are definately looking better.
