Which rendering will produce a pretty good size video, in terms of megabytes?

AVI is just a container. The size of the video is determined by the CODEC that is used to encode the video. Without knowing what AVI template you used, it’s hard to say why it was so large but assuming you used something like Sony YUV the file should be huge because that is a lossless format to be used as an intermediary format not as a final render format.

That’s because AVCHD doesn’t use an MP4 extensions. Again MP4 is just a container for MPEG4 video.

Try using MainConcept AVC with one of the “Internet HD …” templates. That will produce MP4 files that are small in size but high in quality.
