    Hello,

I’m putting together a short demo reel using premiere CS4 and obviously want the best quality possible. I will be exporting this for posting online as well as on DVDs. My issue is that I’m not sure which project setting to use as I have a variety of footage I’m working with. My clips comprise of mxf(P2); hdv; mpg; and mov(DV).

The mpg and mov files are 720×480 (DVD Rips) while the hdv and mxf are both 1080p/i and 720p. Basically, a hodgepodge of goodness.

If I have a 720p project, I have to scale the SD clips to around 150%, losing a lot of resolution and clarity (and side cropping of course). Won’t this look a bit fishy on a 720p export for youtube for example?

However, if I use a 720×480 project setting, the SD is fine but I wont be able to export as an HD file to really showcase the good HD footage that I have. If I do choose HD resolution, should the project type be DVCPROHD or HDV? Is there a middle road somewhere?

    Thanks for your help,

    Josh

I’d create it in HD then export for YouTube. Export the HD sequence in the Export panel and choose SD for your MPEG2 version. Makes sense?

BTW, it’s a given that your SD clips will look soft in an HD sequence. Some folks use a hardware conversion (via an AJA card or a Teranexbox) for better results.
