Just was given an older imac (see below for specs) and wanted to know how far I can upgrade OSX. Currently it has 10.4.11 (tiger). Can I upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion or perhaps only to Snow Leopard? AND which would be the cheapest path, thanks in advance.

    Specs:
iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz
    Single processor 4 GB ram

That should go as high as Lion, we’d need to know the model year or part number to say if 10.8 would work. If it has an aluminum case, it can do Mountain Lion.

Thanks Andrew. It does have an aluminum case and the model identifier is iMac7,1. Can I jump right to Lion or do I need to purchase 10.5 & .6 to get to .7 or .8?

You need at least Snow Leopard to upgrade it via the App store. I believe you can call Apple and order Lion or Mountain Lion by mail.

If you have other Macs withSnow Leopard or Lion you can use them to download the Lion installer again and use it to make a bootable install disk. You only need Snow Leopard if you have no other Macs to download Lion with.

I wouldn’t bother with anything past snow leopard IMO. My MBP has been running slower since I upped to ML.
