which one is better?
Posted by Arthur Puig on December 10, 2009 at 6:45 amHi,
I’m new to 3D, and I’m thinking in taking some tutorials, but I’m unsure as to take Cinema4D or Maya. I know this is a Cinema4D forum, but if anybody can give me an unbiased answer I’d appreciate it, at least which are the big differences between them.
Thanks!

December 10, 2009 at 6:59 amMaya is more the industry standard but cinema 4D has a great learning curve and is really growing inside broadcast. They are both great all round software maya has more custom rigging and better particles but the particles are far more difficult to control and there is nurbs modeling that cinema pretty much completely lacks.
I have worked with a few different programs and always came back to cinema but I assume thats because I learned it first.

December 10, 2009 at 7:36 amHi Arthur –
I teach in the motion graphic design department at Expression College for Digital Art. Our department used to teach Maya, but as Randy said, found Cinema to be a faster learning curve. We also find that the jobs our graduates get in the motion graphics field require that they now know Cinema 4D. One of our other departments, the animation and visual effects group, teaches Maya since these are the people that will be going out and working on large movie productions (creatures, large visual effects, etc.)and Maya is the industry standard there.
I have personally used several 3D packages in my career, including Lightwave, Maya, Soft Image and now Cinema 4D..and I love Cinema now. I’m not sure if I’ll ever go back. Oh, and Cinema 4D has a nice workflow with After Effects.
Just my two cents. Hope these answers help you make a decision.

December 10, 2009 at 9:32 pmThanks you guys for your answers. I tried to do some tutorials in Maya before in I couldn’t keep up with it, it’s not just learning the software, it’s also learning 3D with it, I’m a video editor and colorist and always wanted to get into 3D. I did some intro lessons to Cinema 4D and I love it, but I didn’t know what the big differences were with Maya, I guess Nurbs may be a big one.
I guess I’ll start with C4D and move to Maya when I feel confortable with it.Thanks!
