I’m a 30-year DP with a number of cameras: Betacam, MiniDV and VariCam. I love the VariCam and it’s great for all-in-house work, but lately I find myself losing work to 1080i capable cameras. I’ve had to rent Panasonic’s HDX900 (2/3″) and JVC’s HM700UXT (1/3″) cameras recently.

With all the options out there, it’s confusing. I’d like to go solid state, but 2/3″ media like P2 are expensive, and those cameras that use Flash cards (like the JVC) are not broadcast quality.

I’m thinking about selling the VariCam and buying an HDX-900, and supplementing that with a DSLR for time lapse and other specialty work. Opinions?
