I’m wrapping up a feature lenght documentary and need a good quality MPEG-2 encoder for the Mac.

I’m familier with Compressor, but have heard good things about BitVice and MegaPEG.X pro. Others suggest the Heuris MPEG Power Pro. Anyone with experience using these different tools, or pointers to objective reviews ?

I’d like to keep the cost resonable as I figure for final mastering I will probably send it out to a pro shop with a hardware encoder.

I’m on a Mac G5 Dual 2.0 with 2.5GB of RAM. The video footage is PAL & NTSC DVCAM. Would also like the ability to work with SD 10-bit uncompressed. And maybe from HD, although for now, I will leave that to the pro shop.

    Any opinions or suggestions appreciated.

I you plan to farm out the encoding to someone with a harware encoder for final mastering, compressor should be fine right now. Some say Bitvice is better – I personally dont see much of a difference except the fact BITvice will takes hours to encode.
