Which Macbook Pro to purchase

I went with the 15″ 2.4 Ghz. No express slot, but I think that will be addressed with thunderbolt devices over time. I’m very happy with it.

4 gigs is barely enough for Lion and FCP to operate. Can it hold more than 8gig? If so get it. Forget the SSD. Just an overpriced frill. Get an i7 over an i5 regardless of the ghz.

Bret’s advice is good I think. Except for the SSD… I can’t tell you how much faster the whole computer feels with it. That said, 128 GB is really not enough unless you only use it professionally, and don’t store all those family pics or iTunes library material.

Buy the RAM from someone other than Apple, and save a bunch.

I’d not be afraid to buy one of the refurbs they sell either. Usually great savings, and it’s a fully warranted machine.

The 17″ adds a lot of screen space over the 15. I’d look at this too. I wanted the smaller machine, but ended up with the 17″ because of the display’s higher res.

Now that you have different options, I am going to second Jerry’s suggestion. Think of your computer as an investment. You will get many uses out of it and hopefully pay itself off quickly with some jobs.

I will be editing a lot of 1080i footage with filters. I have read that MacBook Pros overheat. Do you find this to be true? I have a tower but do editing on road a lot lately so trying to figure out what I can do with the MacBook pro, what limitations there are etc. The most ram for MacBooks is 8gb.

I don’t think mine is running too hot. It warms up but so would any computer doing heavy lifting. It’s warranty would cover a problem from overheating in any event. Buy the applecare during the first year for sure too.
