I read where eSATA is a ton faster than FW400, so I bought a PCMCIA card for my Powerbook G4 to connect my new G-tech Quad. However, it seems slower. More spinning beach balls. I’m thinking of going back to the FW400.

See my specs below. I know I should buy a more modern computer but just trying to make due right now.

Is it my imagination or is this configuration slower?

    FCP 4.5 /
    OS 10.4.9 /
    1Ghz G4 powerbook + 1 G ram /
Daisy chained: LaCie FW 400 150 GB and G-tech 500 HD
G-Tech Quad 750GB connected by eSATA PCMCIA card
    playback deck: Pan dv2500

It is much faster. Did you properly format that drive before using it?

I did plug ‘n play because it was already formated as OS journaled. Should I do something else?

You never start using a drive unless you format it on the machine that you will be using it on.

Reformat it as Mac OS Extended. NOT journaled.

I guess I should be in the Mac basics forum, but perhaps I misspoke. Is Mac Extended (journaled) the same as what you’re talking about? That’s how the drive came.
