    Hi there,

I have been waiting for a long time to upgrade my GPU on my homemade machine running MacOS.
I am now in the process of buying one. And I’d like some advices.

I used to work with a GTX 1080 8Gb and have not been particularly impressed by it (playback not that smooth as part of my disappointment). Moreover only AMD GPU are now allowed on the newest macos (and for a bit of time now) so I will buy a AMD card. Now which one?

I have been looking at a AMD RT 5700 XT but all I could find were second hand GPUs with noway to know if the card has been abused.

I have also been told about the Radeon Pro WX7100 which is less likely to have been used for mining for example, but I don’t know its performance for editing video.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks a lot
    A.

I have not had a AMD GPU recently, but I can tell you from experience with the EVGA RTX 2080, with 8 GB RAM that I presently use, 8 GB of RAM is not enough for smooth playback of 4K log footage in some situations. I often get the GPU memory is full message. No matter what brand of GPU the problem exists. My next GPU will have at least 24 GB of RAM.

    Sorry, a GTX on Mac.

I don’t think that is now possible. Nvidia is not supported by Apple anymore.

What I was trying to say is that no matter what brand GPU you choose for your build, just make sure it has as much RAM as you can get for smooth playback in Resolve. My next build will have at least 24 GB of GPU RAM.

Your other alternative is to switch to a Windows based system where all brands of GPUs should be available.

    Hi,

I was always very opposed to AMD GPUs, but had to go for my new HacMac with one.
And I must say I am very happy with it: 6900 XT 16GB.
    It pretty much rocks.
In the DVR Candle Light Test on LiftGammaGain, I blow almost all other machines out of the water. In the top 3% of all test results.
