  • Which frame size to use in my sequence?

Posted by Paul Campbell on December 22, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Hi. I have a question about 720×480 vs. 720×486. In trying to decide which frame size to use for my timeline, I have the following to consider:

The animated graphics were done at 720×486…
The videos I ripped from Mpeg Streamclip were ripped at 720×480…
The HD footage shot needs to be downsized and converted from 1080p/24 frames.
The final product is destined for cable TV.

I know NTSC DV is 720×486, and NTSC SD is 720×480, but I’m unsure which of these to use for
my sequence. Do I use 720×480 and then convert my graphics and HD stuff to that, or go the
    other route?

What will you be outputting to? DV is 720×480. SD video…beta, digibeta…that is 720×486. DV has some vertical blanking that other SD formats do not. If you are ouputting to DV, then 720×480 is the choice. If you are going to to beta or digibeta, then 720×486.

Crap, I totally got that backwards. Thanks for the correction.

If I was outputting to DVD what would my choice be?

Either is fine. The vertical blanking is covered by the overscan on TVs anyway. NO one will see the black bars.

    Hi Paul,
    NTSC MPG-2 are 720×480.
If you go to 720×486 some off your footage will be resized twice: Once in FC (to 720×486) another in Compressor (to 720×480).
I would go directly in FC to 720×480. No resize in Compressor.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
