  • which format should I choose?

I am doing a project that I’ve been shooting in HDV 1080-60i.
There will be some other footage for this project coming from another source that will probably make my footage look inferior but they want to know what format I prefer…this is what they sent…”For your reference, our primary camera is a Panasonic P2 camera that shoots formats in AVC-Intra and also in DVC-ProHD. We also could transcode material to a Quicktime file format before sending.”
What should I ask for, the same as mine?
    Thanks very much,
    Randy

[Randy Brown] “”For your reference, our primary camera is a Panasonic P2 camera that shoots formats in AVC-Intra and also in DVC-ProHD. We also could transcode material to a Quicktime file format before sending.””

Hmmm… that’s a tough one because Vegas can’t edit Panasonic P2 natively (you’ll need to buy a plug-in to use it), I not sure if DVCProHD can be read on a PC, and the alternative is for them to transcode to QuickTime which is not native to the PC.

I would ask for a small DVCProHD file and see if Vegas can read it. If it can you are good to go. If it can’t, ask if they could render to Avid DNxHD 8-bit. You will both need to download the free Avid DNxHD Codec from the Avid web site but this is probably the best format to transfer between Mac and PC.

I’ll ask for the DVCProHD but also maybe ask for HDV 1080-60i?

Randy, if this other source is using a Mac, ask for it in ProRes format.
As long as you have current versions of both Vegas Pro (preferably 10) and QuickTime, you should be able to read it.
As John suggested, ask for a small sample to confirm readability on your part.

Oh yea, I forgot that PC’s can read ProRes they just can’t write it. That might be a better solution if it works.
