Which codec for animation – not video – for the web?
Hi! I’ve compressed video for the web but never animation, and i’m not sure which to use!?
The master file is 640×480 @ 30fps with a run-time of 1 min 36 seconds. The imagery is very clean – illustrator-esque vector graphics on a white background – but with motion blur, depth of field rendering etc.. it’s not exactly a Flash animation.
I’m assuming the target res would be ~320×240 @ 15fps or thereabouts and < 5mb. So, any advice? I've tinkered with a few high-compression video codecs (Mpeg4, Sorenson, etc..) and the output is pretty dirty. Anything that would preserve the cleanness of the imagery would be helpful! Also, any advice about the audio (techno music & voice @ 44.1/16/stereo) would be greatly appreciated too! Travel Atlas * Org | Start Somewhere

I’m assuming you’re targeting QuickTime here.
H.264 is beautiful for this kind of content, but requires QuickTime 7 which isn’t in final release for Windows yet. If you don’t mind buying another product, I recommend Compression Master from Popwire. It’ll use a good 2-pass VBR MPEG-4 codec in .mp4, which looks a LOT better than Apple’s stock MPEG-4 codec.
For audio in QuickTime, it’s all about AAC-LC. 128 Kbps stereo 44.1 is glorious – same settings as used with the iTunes Music Store.

I agree with Ben’s recommendation for using Compression Master 3 and MPEG-4 as the format. It will look a lot better than your encodes from QT Pro using Apple’s MPEG-4 encoder. CM also has an excellent Real Media encoder, which would do a great job with your animation files.
