can someone advise please? I’m a multimedia consultant, who’s suddenly moved (through huge demand) into quality video event coverage (delivered as dvd or docu). until now I’ve been hiring in cameras (and crew) for shoots – conferences, field projects, vip coverage, etc. However, I now see it would be a benefit to have one camera “in house”so I can cover small events myself, or use it as 2nd or 3rd (or 4th) camera for larger events.
Without hands on experience it’s hard to pick my way through all the ads, however. For example, I like the look of the Sony A1 – but does it have the quality?
I need 2 audio inputs, DV as well as HDV, firewire data connection, ability to capture straight to Mac, ability to use as deck……and low budget too!
Like I say, any help would be great!

More details – I output through FCP5, and the camera will need 2 XLR audio inputs, wide angle+ telphoto lenses, ability to record DVCAM as well as HDV,plus additional battery pack(s) to bump up performance to 10 hours without costing an arma and a leg…….

Umm…. you seem to have A LOT of feature requests for a cheap camera.

if you want DVCAM and HDV… then Sony is really your only choice…. although I don’t think the HDV can switch on the fly (liek decks can)

    Speaking of decks

DO NOT USE a CAMERA AS A DECK

You can get a dedicated HDV and DVCAM deck for $2K…. You’ll never find a camera that cheap. But if you trash your camera heasd by shuttling and rewinding.. you’ll spend more than 2K geting it fixed.

I suggest you start at B&H and look at Sony HDV cameras and see what matches your numerous feature requests.
