May 23, 2006 at 5:14 pmMy favorite AE books are the Creating Motion Graphics series by Chris and Trish Meyer. They aren’t necessarily written specifically for a beginner, but they cover every detail and work from simple to complex. If you’re a competent computer user and have some experience with computer graphics (ie, Photoshop), you should be fine with them.
The After Effects Hands-On-Training book from Lynda.com looked pretty good for beginners when I flipped through it a year or so ago. Speaking of Lynda.com, lots of people rave about their video training, though I’ve never experienced it myself.
There’s also the Adobe Classroom In A Book, which is a series of lessons. It’s not very good as a comprehensive resource, but it does walk you through most aspects of the program, and is definitely written for a beginner.

June 18, 2006 at 10:49 pmLynda.com has, to my mind some of the best training available. They have AE training going back to 5.5 and much of that is worthwhile too. They have 2-3 courses about 7.0 and they are all great. Also try Total training, although it’s much more expensive, it’s very sound. The Myers books are terrific too but they have not covered 7.0. BTW if you buy AE 7 spend more and get the Professional version, it’s money very well spent. Cheers,
